Cholesterol Lowering Drugs for Children?
It was recently reported in the New York Times that the nation’s pediatricians recommend the use of cholesterol lowering drugs for children as early as age 8 if cholesterol screening finds a problem.
This idea is preposterous! Aren’t we already the drug nation? When I say this, I am talking about legalized drugs. Are we looking to add more drugs to our daily repertoire?
Very little attention was paid to our high fat diet. As we all know some foods contribute to “bad cholesterol“. The problem is that our diet is not balanced. Very little attention was paid to diet modification. How about changing diets from bacon or sausage to oatmeal or “buckwheat” or many other foods that have been shown to lower cholesterol. Our children have become part of the brownie culture with very little concern for a healthy diet.
Our biggest threat to health is using drugs as an easy quick fix approach rather than looking at the root cause of a problem. Adopting healthier lifestyles and diets is a good start.
