Wall-E & The State Of Our Health
Although this movie is entertaining, it has some strong social messages. The movie starts out with the robot, Wall-E, cleaning up refuse on earth. Wall-E has developed a personality and even enjoys collecting items for himself like garden gnomes.
As the plot develops we find out that earth in the future will become inhospitable to live in. Toxic overload has taken over the entire planet making it impossible to live on and the inhabitants have evacuated the planet. 700 years later the offspring of the planet now live on a space ship. Unfortunately modern high tech conveniences have taken over day-to-day physical activities for the inhabitants of the space ship. People no longer have to walk because they are moved around with levitating recliners and automatically fed with a plentiful amount of food. They have become greatly obese and immobile.
This brings up many questions. Are we polluting our planet so much that we are making it impossible to sustain life? Are we going to be forced to go to other planets to escape pollution rather than visit for exploratory purposes?
I believe that pollution is an issue that more and more people are becoming conscious about. Many steps are being taken to prevent and clean up these problems. Many rivers and streams have become cleaner in the last few years and wild life has begun to return. We still have a long way to clean up pollution, but at least an effort has begun. Even developing countries are starting to look closely at pollution problems.
The second important message is that society is becoming too inactive, which is causing an alarming increase in people suffering from obesity. The average American is much heavier than Europeans. Better diets and more exercise tend to make an individual leaner. The cost of gas going up may be a blessing in disguise and good for our health. I do believe in affordable transportation that is socially responsible and hope in the near future new alternative energy methods develop. However, high gas prices may force more people to seek alternative transportation. Lately I have noticed more people are walking and riding bikes. I recently came across an individual who decided to use his bike instead of his car to go to work. He was fortunate because he only lived 7 miles from his job.
We as individuals need to make a conscience effort to take better care of our planet and take better care of ourselves. Wall-E gave us a reality check that if we choose to ignore the warning signs all around us that our children and future generations will pay the price.
